At Meenkilly NS, we encourage pupils to move as much as possible throughout the school day. Sitting for long periods—also known as sedentary time—can affect both our bodies and our minds. By reducing sedentary time, children feel healthier, happier, and more ready to learn.
Why it’s important to decrease sedentary time:
- Improves physical health – Regular movement helps to strengthen muscles and bones, improves circulation, and builds overall fitness.
- Boosts concentration and learning – Short activity breaks refresh the brain, helping pupils to focus better in class.
- Supports wellbeing – Movement reduces stress and anxiety, giving children more energy and a positive mindset.
- Builds lifelong habits – Learning the value of regular activity at a young age encourages children to stay active throughout their lives.
At our school, we use Active Breaks, the Walkway, playground games, outdoor learning, and fun challenges to help pupils sit less and move more every day.
