At Meenkilly National School, we pride ourselves on being an active and energetic school where physical activity is a valued part of daily life. Throughout the school year, pupils engage in a wide variety of sporting and physical activities, supported by our committed staff and community volunteers.

Each year, we welcome specialist coaches in football, tennis, and rugby who work with the children over six-week blocks. These sessions help to develop skills, build confidence, and foster a love of sport among our pupils.

We are proud participants in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions, where our teams represent the school with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. This is made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of our volunteer coaches, Michael Lenihan and Shane Gleeson (parent), who dedicate their time and expertise to helping our students grow and improve in Gaelic games.

Every morning, after arriving at school and enjoying some free play in the yard, our Active School Committee (ASC) leads the entire school in exercises before assembly. This daily routine sets a positive tone for the day and promotes healthy habits among all pupils.

During both break and lunch times, pupils have access to a wide range of PE equipment, including balls, tennis rackets, badminton rackets, hula hoops, skipping ropes, gymnastic ribbons, and more. The ASC plays a key role in managing this, ensuring the PE shed is well-organised and that equipment is easily accessible to everyone.

At Meenkilly NS, we believe in making physical activity fun, inclusive, and a part of everyday school life.

Children have access to a well-equipped tarred school yard, which includes a sensory garden, a scenic walkway, and a play tunnel that sparks imaginative play. During fine weather, the children enjoy outdoor time on the football pitch, which now boasts newly fitted goals, perfect for energetic matches and friendly games.

Nature lovers in the school particularly enjoy the designated no-mow area, where butterflies can often be seen fluttering about, and our resident rabbits occasionally make an appearance—delighting children and staff alike.

A favourite highlight of the week is Monday Music Madness, when the yard comes alive with music. Children are encouraged to dance, sing along, and enjoy the joyful atmosphere that sets a positive tone for the week ahead.
