Our Four Fundamental Movement Skills

At Meenkilly NS, we place a strong focus on developing Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). These are the building blocks of all physical activity and sport. We practise them regularly so that every child can move with confidence and enjoyment.

1. Walking

  • How we do it: Pupils practise walking with good posture, steady rhythm, and awareness of space.
  • Benefits: Walking improves balance, coordination, and endurance. It is also a lifelong skill that supports overall fitness and wellbeing.

2. Running

  • How we do it: Children learn to run with light steps, strong arm movements, and controlled breathing.
  • Benefits: Running builds stamina, strength, and speed. It helps children to enjoy active play and prepares them for many sports and games.

3. Kicking

  • How we do it: Pupils practise kicking with accuracy and control, using both feet and learning different types of kicks.
  • Benefits: Kicking develops leg strength, coordination, and balance. It is an important skill for games like soccer, football, and rugby.

4. Catching

  • How we do it: Children learn to keep their eyes on the ball, get their hands ready, and absorb the ball’s force as they catch.
  • Benefits: Catching improves hand–eye coordination, reaction time, and teamwork. It is a key skill for confidence in games and sports.

By focusing on these four fundamental movement skills—walking, running, kicking, and catching—we give our pupils the foundation they need to enjoy a wide variety of physical activities, both now and in the future.
